Art talk about 'Shroud' on Bora Bora

Ambiorn Happy, Kulturnyt.net
29. october 2024.

My cigarettes say with no shame in life that I will be killed in a little while, in a moment. With EU guarantee. So that's why I have a special interest in tonight's art talk on Bora Bora's stage. It's about grief, and it's a prelude to 'Shroud', which you must see in the month of March 2025 at Bora Bora. A performance created by Andreas Constantinou.
Third part in his trilogy about death.

I experienced the first two works, My Undying Love (6 stars) and Carcass (6 stars), so I look forward to 'Shroud'.

In addition to Andreas Constantinou, a professor of grief, Dorthe Refslund Christensen, is also on stage. The conversation is moderated by Tone Haldrup Lorenzen.

Crying women and "move on"

It's not a popular topic to talk about, in general. Grief. Have you also experienced grief?

Tone: How did your interest in grief as a theme in your art begin?
Andreas: - My mother had become terminally ill, and I loved her very much. I interviewed her and was with her till the end. She meant a lot to me, says Andreas.
- My father and my relationship was not that close. He had a hard time with the choices I've made in life.
- But my father dies first, and a month later my mother. Then I was struck with grief.

And you? Why become a professor in grief?
Dorthe: - I studied grief reactions at Aarhus University together with my husband for 10 years. We studied in the field how parents deal with the death of a child. My husband died in 2018, and since then I have studied grief more intensively as a social and cultural phenomenon. For example, it is normal in our culture not to talk about grief. It is somewhat private.
Andreas: - That's right!
Dorthe: - And we actually need to talk about the grief with others.
Andreas: - Yes!
Dorthe: - In Finland they have weeping women who cry for others. We don't have that here in Denmark. We often go through grief alone, and we feel it is something very private. Furthermore, we live in a capitalist society. So there are limits to how long we can be in mourning. We tend to say to ourselves - and to others - "move on!".

Grief as a catalyst for art and science

Grief is private. But it is also personal. And in the personal lies a power that can become art and science. The artist Andreas and the professor Dorthe use that power in their work. One with analysis and data, the other with practice and body.

Man in the audience: You both talk about 'research', each with your own method, but I hear you arrive at roughly the same result. Can you talk about how you do 'research' in relation to grief?
Andreas: - Grief is something I don't want to push away or do without. Just bring it on! I want to feel it, in my body. When my mother died, a friend wrote to me: "Live is shit", and I disagreed so much. Because I discovered through grief how much I love life! I don't need the sadness as a sad place to be sad. On the contrary. I am happy! So I texted him back: "Life is good!".
- But it is clear that the grief also points a finger at myself. When someone dies, I come into contact with the fact that this will also happen to me one day. That I die.
- In the process of making art out of grief - as in 'Shroud', I have used my body. I have felt my physical body. And the art that has come out of grief, it is my ritual to remember the dead. Somewhere in the UK there is a stone, and my sisters need in their mourning ritual to visit that tombstone. I need to create art, as a mourning ritual.

Dorthe: - As a scientist, I talk to people who have experienced grief. I collect data, I analyze and I create viewpoints that shed light on the grief. We can see that rituals are needed. We gather in a church, or make a grave site, we eat some good food on the anniversary of someone's death, we do many different things. There are no right ways to deal with grief. Everyone chooses his own method.

Grief on social media

With the freedom of expression on X, there are endless ways to experience grief. Many videos of cruelty and brutality, pictures from everyday life. Oppressed people share depictions of death and destruction with each other - to tell someone. People die online and we get sad. We experience grief even if the dead person is a thousand kilometers away.

Woman in the audience: Can you give any advice on how to deal with grief over long distances? When you're online, you often sit alone, and don't have anyone to share your sorrow with?
Andreas: - I think we need someone to hold the room for us. That someone creates a place where we can share with each other.
Tone: - For example, on the street. People take to the streets, make demonstrations, make noise and paint the city with sadness. We need that, to gather in the street and express our grief together. As a lament, or just walking through the street in a crowd and in silence. It can be done in many ways.
Dorthe: - There are also online communities where you can talk together. There really are, communities online.

Grief is a question that art and science provide answers to

There were many more questions and answers at the art talk than I can remember. So you must go and experience the 'Shroud' and find answers to your own questions. But basically the question is: "Is it best for me to close my throat and keep the grief down? Or should I cry and talk about the grief to the people around me?"

Thanks for art talk on Bora Bora. It was a good experience, for me and my grief.
